Transfer Quarterback Leads Spring Valley to 42-7 Opening Win Over PHS

HUNTINGTON - Jack Roy, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound transfer quarterback, showed he fit right in with the huge Spring Valley lineman as he led the Timberwolves to a 42-7 win over Parkersburg here Friday night in the 2020 season opener for both teams.
Roy, who came from Fairview High School, completed 13 of 26 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing 11 times for 53 yards and another score as he led the usually heavily ground-laden Wolves to an impressive victory behind their three Division I linemen.
The Wolves rolled up 292 yards on the ground but had their fans wondering when the last time they passed the ball 26 times. Meanwhile, the Spring Valley defense was outstanding in holding what was expected to be an explosive PHS offense to a mere four first downs and only 65 yards in total offense. The home team ran 66 plays to just 35 for the Big Reds.
Brody Brumfield, a returning starter for Spring Valley, ran for two touchdowns while Cole Diamond had 96 yards rushing on just seven carries.
Junior Bryson Singer completed six of 16 passes for 35 yards for PHS while adding just five yards on 12 rushes. Austin Fleming had a 40 yards reception in the third quarter which set up Carter King’s 13 yards run for the Big Reds only score of the night.
Spring Valley scored on the game’s first series with a 72 yard, eight play drive capped by Roy’s one yards sneak on a fourth down play.
With great field position, the Wolves scored with 2:02 left in the first quarter on a 12 yard run by Brumfield but missed a 38 yard field goal early in the second period.
The Wolves continued to show off their new-found passing attack as Roy found Ben Turner and then Hank Hinchman on identical 23-yard scoring tosses to make it 28-0 at the half.
Singer had an interception in the end zone late in first half, a half which saw the Big Reds collect just one first down (on a penalty) and only 13 total yards.
Spring Valley missed a 36 yard field goal on its first possession of the second half but scored on its second try thanks to starting from the PHS 42 yard line as Roy hit Hinchman with a touchdown pass from 11 yards out.
Singer’s 40 yard completion to Fleming and a pass interference penalty set up King’s 13 yard run with 1:37 left in the third quarter but that was the lone highlight for the Big Reds.
After Brumfield’s 15 yard scoring run with 6:55 left in the game, the mercy rule running clock went into effect and the contest ended quickly.
PHS is scheduled to play at Capital next Friday but Kanawha County is expected to be listed as an orange county Saturday night and can only play if all their players are tested and negative results received prior to the game. Capital opted to not take the tests this week and thus did not play their game. If they opt out again PHS must either find a replacement or take a bye.
